You probably think toughness means not feeling pain, or not showing it if you do. That’s not toughness — that’s acting. Real toughness is fully feeling something hard, uncomfortable, or painful, and choosing to keep doing your job anyway.

That single idea is the spine of the flagship book in the NRF Mental Game Library, and it’s the standard I want you holding yourself to.

Built from real scars, not motivational posters

Mental Toughness for the Football Player doesn’t tell you to “believe in yourself.” It shows you what toughness actually looked like for me, built one uncomfortable rep at a time — because I lived most of these chapters before I ever wrote them down for you.

I was diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter as a young player — a knee condition that’s extremely common in young athletes, and one you might already have yourself. I played through it with knee bands for years. The practice field where I grew up playing, back home in Mexico, was packed dirt and loose rock — no turf. My team had a saying for pushing through an in-game injury: “Hoy no duele, mañana sí.” Today it doesn’t hurt. Tomorrow it will. Finish the game first.

I learned an even harder version of the same lesson later, in the United States Marine Corps — where I joined without speaking a word of English, and had to learn to push forward without even having the words to explain what hurt.

What’s inside for you

Ten chapters, each with a reflection question and a real weekly challenge — built for you whether you’re a player, a coach, or a parent who wants something honest, not generic.
