You’ve got the same problem every staff has in August: too much offense, not enough practice time. The install schedule you build in July decides whether your players know the system by week three — or whether you’re still teaching base concepts on Friday nights in October. Here’s how I’d build yours.

Start from your calendar, not your playbook

Your install schedule goes wrong before day one if you build it around everything you want to teach instead of how many practice reps you actually have. Count your padded practices before fall camp starts. That number — not your playbook’s table of contents — is what sets how much you can realistically install.

Give one section per session, not one unit per week

“Install the run game this week” sounds organized on your whiteboard, but it usually means you’re teaching five different concepts in one meeting, and your players retain the first and last one and lose the middle three. Break each unit into its actual teaching sections — footwork, reads, protections, finishing — and give each one its own session. It’ll feel slower to you. It isn’t. You’ll spend less time re-teaching in October.

Build in a repeat day

Every third or fourth practice on your calendar should have zero new install. Just repetition of what’s already in. You’ll be tempted to skip this because it feels like wasted time, but it’s the single biggest lever you have for actually keeping a concept once camp ends and the season starts eating your practice reps for special teams, opponent prep, and situational work.

Write it down before camp starts

An install schedule that lives in your head changes every day depending on how your last practice went — which means your position coaches are never quite in sync with what you actually taught. Write the whole thing out before day one: date, section, install method (deck, walkthrough, cards), and a proof-of-learning check. It becomes the single source of truth for your whole staff, not just you.

If you’d rather not build your install schedule from scratch, every Next Rep Football position package already includes a full 3-week install schedule as part of the coach’s guide — built the way you’d actually run camp, not the way a textbook says to.
