A hesitant run fit is worse than no fit at all. That’s the sentence I open every run-fit install with, because it’s counterintuitive and it’s true. A linebacker who fills slowly gives the ball carrier time to find a crease. A linebacker who fills fast into the wrong gap is just as dangerous to the defense. Read first. Then attack — decisively.

Own your gap before you own the tackle

Press the line of scrimmage once the run is confirmed — don’t wait for the ball carrier to come to you. But press into your gap, not the nearest open space. Jumping to an adjacent gap before the ball has crossed the line of scrimmage is how a defense with eleven correct assignments still gives up a cutback for twenty yards. Your gap first, always, even when it looks empty.

Counter punishes the linebacker who chases

This is the single hardest habit to build and the one that separates disciplined linebackers from fast ones. On a counter play, the initial flow goes one way and the ball comes back against the grain. Chase that initial flow and you’ve taken yourself out of the play before it even develops. Hold your gap. The counter is designed to punish exactly the player who didn’t.

Inside hands, then finish the tackle

When you take on a block, the inside hand has to get inside the blocker’s pads — outside hands lose, every time, regardless of who’s stronger. Shed with a rip, swim, or push-pull rather than staying attached to the blocker. Then finish: eyes on the near hip of the ball carrier, wrap up, and never stop driving your feet. A stopped-feet tackle is a missed tackle waiting to happen.

Six run plays, six different keys

Inside zone means hold your gap and wait for the cut — don’t over-pursue the flow. Outside zone means squeeze from inside out and force the cutback. Power means attack the lead blocker before he reaches the second level. Trap means attack the puller before he sets. Every run scheme is asking your gap discipline a different question — know the answer before the ball is snapped.
