This is the part of “playing hurt” that gets skipped the most, and it’s the part that matters the most for you. Toughness is for hurt. A doctor is for injured. Confusing the two doesn’t make you tougher — it makes you unavailable for your next ten games, or worse. These signs always mean stop and get checked, no exceptions, no matter what’s on the line:

This call isn’t yours alone

The pain-versus-injury call belongs to your coaches and medical staff, not you gritting your teeth on the sideline trying to prove something. If you want back in the game, you’re not a reliable judge of your own concussion symptoms — that’s not a knock on your toughness, it’s just how head injuries work. That’s exactly why this list exists: so you don’t have to make the call alone, in the heat of the moment, with the score on the line.

If you see any of this in yourself or in a teammate, the answer isn’t “walk it off.” The answer is a doctor. That’s not weakness — it’s the same discipline that lets you play hurt safely for the rest of your season.
